“To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: (28) Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus: ” Colossians 1.27-28
The words “To whom” in v. 27 are a reference to “the saints” Paul mentioned in the previous verse. Paul is addressing these remarks to the Colossian believers, and ultimately to all others who would read these words. He says, “God wants you to know about this glorious mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.” Don’t gloss over those words … “Christ in you … the HOPE of glory.” It is no longer a mystery, but rather a harbinger of real hope for every believer. The knowledge we have that Christ lives within us brings a new dimension to our spiritual walk each day. We NEVER take a single step in our journey here on earth that He is not with us. That is not only sobering, but it is also a sustainer of our hope that we can and will make it through every circumstance.
V. 28 is Paul’s declaration that his goal through life is to declare Christ, warning everyone with whom he has contact, and teaching those who are Christ followers to reach a level of spiritual maturity that would allow them to be full grown (perfect) in Christ. Even though you and I are nothing like the Apostle Paul, we can have as our goal in life to declare Christ through our testimonies, and we can teach by example how the Christ-life should be lived, so that others may also reach a greater level of maturity in Christ.
