“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Philippians 4.8
Paul tackles a very critical issue here when he speaks about our thought life. There are some who believe that it doesn’t matter what they think, it won’t affect the way they live. In Proverbs 23.7, Solomon reminds us: “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he:” Our thought life is uniquely connected to our wants, desires, and behavior.
Paul knows what you and I must learn – that Satan continually seeks to control our minds. His only port of entry into our lives is our mind. We live in a world in which much of the advertising media tries to manipulate our minds and they do it in such a subtle way. We find ourselves being manipulated and we are not even aware of it. So, here is the focal point of this verse – WE are responsible for what goes into our mind and what comes out in our behavior and our attitude. What is the greatest tool for providing the best thought structure of our mind? It is the Word of God. Just remember that Satan does not care how much of the Bible you read AS LONG AS IT NEVER CHANGES YOU. The ONLY way the Bible is profitable for you and me is when we learn to apply the truth that we are reading and learning. The NEXT STEP is up to you. Determine how you want your mind to be controlled and by whom. Allow the Bible to be provide the information and the encouragement you need. In Paul’s words, “Think on these things.”
