Hold On! It’s Almost Over!

“For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; ” 2 Corinthians 4.17

Look at these words “light affliction.” Most of us don’t consider the unpleasant day-to-day afflictions to be light. Our first question, at least to ourselves, is “How long is this going to last?” But Paul goes on, “which is but for a moment …” Again, if it is even “for a moment” we struggle with “why me, why this, and why now”. So rather than see everything from the negative perspective, why don’t we consider what God is doing in our lives? Paul says this “light affliction” “works for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.” WOW! That sounds like God has something GOOD in mind.
If God’s purpose for me is always what is best (and it is), then I want to begin looking at my life circumstances through that particular filter. Most of us would agree that we have to put up with a lot of “unpleasantness” during our time here on earth. But if we are able to view time in the light of eternity, suddenly our perspective changes. Romans 8.18 says: “For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” Life down here on this earth isn’t all there is. There is an eternity waiting for us that contains that “eternal weight of glory” of which Paul speaks in this verse above. You may have to put up with a lot of “tough stuff” today, but view that through the lens of eternity and think about what God has planned for you there. If my service for God lacks the joy that I should have, I am still viewing the events of my life through selfish eyes that want to whine about my plight in life. The joy of the Lord really is our strength! Just my thoughts …
