“Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” Isaiah 7.14
The context for this verse is interesting. God has just told King Ahaz to ask Him for a sign regarding the battle they were in. Ahaz says, “12But Ahaz said, I will not ask, neither will I tempt the LORD.” (Isaiah 7.12) Can you imagine anyone saying to God, “I will not …”? But Ahaz did.
So God’s response to him was v. 14, quoted above. In essence God said, “I will give you a sign you could never have imagined.” What was that sign? Behold “a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son …” Who would ever have thought to ask for that? No one! That is a physical impossibility for us – BUT God …! You and I know that a virgin cannot and will not conceive a child unless there is a miracle of God.
Let’s move to Matthew1 for a moment: vs. 18-21: “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. 19Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily. 20But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. 21And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.” These words were written to fulfill the promise of Isaiah 7.14.
Matthew tells us that Joseph was a “just man” meaning he wanted to do what was right. And the right thing to do in this case was to take Mary as his wife, knowing she was with child and he was not the father. But he believed God was the God of the IMPOSSIBLE.
Did you know that God still does miracles today? Every time a sinner comes to repent of sin and receive Christ, that is a miracle. None of us could do that – only God. I am so glad that God GAVE the sign and the sign was FULFILLED and we have a SAVIOR in Jesus Christ. Just my thoughts …
