“Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.” Romans 15.13
Hope is a powerful word. When the doctor says that dreaded “C” word but then he adds, “This is curable” hope abounds. But hope of which Paul speaks here goes far beyond hope as it pertains to our health. He attributes hope to our God by calling Him “the God of hope … ”.
It is interesting that Paul joins hope with joy and peace when we “believe” in this God of hope. Think about this … we can be FILLED with joy and peace when we BELIEVE that our God really is the “God of hope.” But what is Paul’s purpose in telling us this?
Here it is: “ … that ye may abound in hope … ” As you know, hope can come in a variety of degrees – some home, more hope, and great hope. Paul is telling us that God wants us to abound in hope. That is a reference to great hope.
So the question arises, “What is the agent through which this hope comes and becomes great hope?” Glad you asked. It is “through the power of the Holy Ghost.” It seems that every day we are becoming more and more aware of the importance of the Holy Spirit and His work in our lives. There are so many things that we can accomplish for God and His kingdom that depend on our willingness to yield to the Holy Spirit.
It is one thing to give “lip service” to yielding to the Spirit. It is quite another thing for us to surrender all we are and all we have to His control. That requires a new focus in our lives. Life is no longer about us but it suddenly becomes all about God and where He is leading us, how He is changing us, and what He wants to do through us. May we allow God’s Spirit to have total control today and every day that follows. Just my thoughts …
