“For there is one God, and one mediator between
God and men, the man Christ Jesus; 6 Who gave
himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.” 2 Timothy 2.5-6
There are some powerful statements in these two short verses. If we believe everything that God says, then we have reason to rejoice when we read these words.
Let’s take a look: (1) there is one God, (2) there is one mediator between God and men, (3) the mediator is Christ Jesus, (4) this mediator gave HIMSELF a ransom for all, and (5) at the proper time the whole world will know this.
It seems like such a stretch for some people to accept that there is only ONE God. If this God of whom Paul speaks really is THE God, nothing that man can create in his mind or with his hands can really be a substitute for this ONE God.
There is “one mediator between God and men … ” One might ask, “Why do we need a mediator?” and the answer lies in Genesis chapter three with the sinfulness of Adam and Eve creating a barrier between God and man. Suddenly Adam and Eve found themselves hiding from God because of their sinful actions. God slew an innocent animal (Genesis 3.21) so they could cloth themselves with the skin of the animal and this was a forward look to the cross, where “the man Christ Jesus” would become the “the one mediator between God and men … ”
To me, this next statement is such a striking truth: “Who gave himself a ransom for all … ” What great responsibility lays on the shoulders of today’s Bible believing churches to declare the truth of Christ’s death “Who gave Himself a ransom for all … ” This is one reason God calls His followers to be missionaries. We need to make sure that those for whom He died know that God loves them that much and gave His Son as “a ransom for all.”
“to be testified in due time.” One day, all the world will KNOW this but for some it will be too late. Let’s do ALL we can with ALL our strength and reach ALL we can because “the man Christ Jesus … gave himself a ransom for all.” Just my thoughts …
