We Have a REAL Friend!

“A man that hath friends must show himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.” Proverbs 18.24

In this verse Solomon is emphasizing the value of having friends. He reminds us that in order to HAVE friends, we must show others that we are friendly and want to have a friendship with them. I know this seems all too obvious, but there is a deeper truth that is implied here.

About whom is he speaking when he says, “there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother”? I believe the deeper truth here is a reference to our Lord Jesus Christ. Who else can be closer than a brother than one who resides within us? We read in the book of Acts 17.28: “For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.”

As believers, our whole being is wrapped up in Christ. It is far too easy to lose our focus in our walk with the Lord. Life is filled with distractions and Satan is always at work trying to get us to lose our focus. When those times come (and they will) we must remember this “friend that sticks closer than a brother.”

What would life look like for each of us if we could successfully negotiate our way through this next week remembering Whose we are? Isaiah 26.3-4 says: “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. 4Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:” What a precious promise of encouragement this is for each of us. When we choose to have our heart and mind fixed on the Lord, He will give us His perfect peace. V. 4 reminds us that we are to trust in the Lord forever – and why? Because “ in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength.” I choose to live there as much as I can. How about you? Just my thoughts …
