“There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.” 1 Corinthians 10.13
TEMPTATION – when you think of that word, what comes to mind? Alcohol doesn’t tempt me. Illegal drugs don’t tempt me. Pornography doesn’t tempt me. I could make a longer list, but you get my point. Each one of these things listed is a temptation for someone. My father was a good man, and he never had these things as a part of his life so that was a good model for me. BUT I do have a weakness – a temptation that I struggle with every day (and it did not come from my father).
God has been so good to me. He has enabled me to do a lot of things well. That is a great blessing and it is also a vehicle that can lead to temptation. I often battle PRIDE in my heart and mind, thinking, “I can do that really well. I don’t need to ask God to help me.” And “such as is common to man” has planted itself squarely in my path. But this is what I love about this verse: “but God is faithful … ” Every time the temptation to be arrogant or proud about something I am about to do, God’s Holy Spirit whispers to me, “Jerry, you don’t want to go there. You know the consequences.”
I am reminded of a story about a young preacher who was asked to speak at this little country church. When he was introduced, he was playing over in his mind these words: “Angel, harken. I am about to really wow these people.” When he finished speaking, he hung his head as he walked off the platform, realizing how poorly he had done. An older man in the congregation stopped him and said, “Young man, if you had gone up on the platform the way you can down, you could have come down the way you went up.”
Let this verse speak to you today the way Paul intended it to do. Remember, God IS faithful and He “will with the temptation make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.” Just my thoughts …
